— -- The following are the U.S. personnel who have been killed in Operation Iraqi Freedom from March to May 2003. All dates reflect when the incidents occurred local time. On May 1, 2003, President Bush declared an end to major combat in Iraq.
• Spc. Zachariah W. Long, 20, of Milton, Pa., killed when the vehicle in which he was traveling from Mosul to Tikrit, Iraq, swerved off the road to avoid a civilian vehicle and turned over, May 30.
• Spc. Michael T. Gleason, 25, of Warren, Pa., killed when the vehicle in which he was traveling in from Mosul to Tikrit, Iraq, swerved off the road to avoid a civilian vehicle and turned over, May 30.
• Spc. Kyle A. Griffin, 20, of Emerson, N.J., killed when the vehicle in which he was traveling from Mosul to Tikrit, Iraq, swerved off the road to avoid a civilian vehicle and turned over, May 30.
• Spc. Jose A. Perez III, 22, of San Diego, Texas, killed in Taji, Iraq when his convoy was ambushed, May 28.
• Staff Sgt. Kenneth R. Bradley, 39, of Utica, Miss., died in Baqubah, Iraq, May 28. Bradley's death was noncombat-related.
• Sgt. Thomas F. Broomhead, 34, of Cannon City, Colo., killed in Fallujah, Iraq, when a vehicle pulled up and assailants fired on him at a checkpoint, May 27.
• Staff Sgt. Michael B. Quinn, 37, of Tampa, Fla., killed in Fallujah, Iraq, when a vehicle pulled up to the checkpoint he was guarding and assailants fired on him, May 27.
• Sgt. Keman L. Mitchell, 24, of Hilliard, Fla., killed in Kirkuk, Iraq, when he jumped into a 7-foot-deep body of water and failed to resurface, May 26. Members of his squad retrieved him but medical crews could not revive him.
• Pfc. Jeremiah D. Smith, 25, of Odessa, Mo., killed in Baghdad, Iraq, when his vehicle hit unexploded ordnance, May 26.
• Staff Sgt. Brett J. Petriken, 30, of Michigan, killed in As Samawah, Iraq, when a heavy equipment transporter struck his vehicle, May 26.
• Pvt. Kenneth A. Nalley, 19, of Hamburg, Iowa, killed in As Samawah, Iraq, when a heavy equipment transporter struck his vehicle, May 26.
• Maj. Mathew E. Schram, 36, of Wisconsin, killed in Hadithah, Iraq, when the military convoy he was traveling with on a resupply mission encountered enemy fire, May 26.
• Pvt. David Evans, Jr., 18, of Buffalo, N.Y., killed in Ad Diwaniyah, Iraq, in an explosion at a facility which contained Iraqi ammunition, May 25.

• Lt. Col. Dominic R. Baragona, 42, of Ohio, killed in Iraq when a tractor-trailer jackknifed on the road and collided with Baragona's vehicle, May 19.
• Sgt. Kirk Allen Straseskie, 23, of Beaver Dam, Wis., drowned in a canal near Al Hillah, Iraq, when he attempted to rescue the crewmembers of a Marine CH-46 helicopter that went down, May 19.
• Spc. Rasheed Sahib, 22, of Brooklyn, N.Y., killed in Balad, Iraq, when a fellow soldier's weapon discharged while they were cleaning their weapons, striking Sahib in the chest, May 18.
• Cpl. Douglas Jose Marencoreyes, 28, of Chino, Calif., killed in Iraq when the transport truck he was riding in rolled over, May 18.
• Master Sgt. William L. Payne, 46, of Michigan, killed in Haswah, Iraq, when an unexploded ordnance he was examining exploded, May 16.

• Sgt. Sean C. Reynolds, 25, of East Lansing, Mich., killed in Iraq. He was climbing a ladder when he fell, causing his M4 rifle to accidentally discharge, May 3.
• Pfc. Jesse A. Givens, 34, of Springfield, Mo., killed in Al Habbaniyah, Iraq, while parked in an M-1 main battle tank alongside the bank of the Euphrates River, May 1. The riverbank gave way resulting in the tank falling into the river.
