4-Year-Old Critically Injured at Disneyland

A N A H E I M, Calif., Sept. 24, 2000 -- A 4-year-old boy who got pinned

underneath the Roger Rabbit Car Toon Spin ride at Disneyland

remained in critical condition Saturday.

Paramedics arrived at the theme park late Friday to find aSouthern California boy underneath a vehicle, said Cynthia Harriss,president of Disneyland Resort.

“There appeared to be no malfunction of the ride or the safetymechanism,” said police Lt. Joe Vargas. “How he got from the car to the ground is something they’ll have to determine.” California Occupational Safety and Health Administration also wasinvestigating, Harriss said in a news release.

Details on the boy’s injuries and his name were withheld by hisparents, said nursing supervisor Jean Necas at University ofCalifornia, Irvine Medical Center.

The Roger Rabbit Car Toon Spin ride will remain closed until aninvestigation is complete, a Disneyland spokesman said. Parkofficials have not determined whether they will revamp the ride,which has seen two accidents this year.

“It’s too soon to know what, if any, changes need to be made,” said park spokesman Ray Gomez.

It was the second time a child was injured on the ride thisyear.

In April, a 13-year-old girl had a bruised foot when she got offthe ride to retrieve a stuffed toy and became trapped in the car’stracks.

The Car Toon Spin is a spinning, 5-minute ride in whichpassengers pretend to drive a cab through a cartoon world.
