1. Former New York City Mayor Ed Koch has died at 88. Koch was a brash, colorful and often confrontational mayor who helped to lead New York City out of its brush with bankruptcy in the 1970s, launching an astonishing municipal turnaround that continues to this day.

2. TSA May be Wasting Millions on Bomb-sniffing Dogs

An investigation released by the U.S. Government Accountability Office Thursday found that the TSA may be wasting millions of dollars in taxpayer money on bomb-sniffing dogs that cannot actually detect bombs. The GAO secretly followed the bomb-sniffing dog teams and discovered that they often failed explosives tests.

3. Explosion at Mexico Oil Company Kills 14

An explosion at the headquarters of Mexico's state-owned oil company killed 14 people and injured 80 on Thursday. There was no immediate cause given for the incident.

4. Negotiators Continue in Ala. Hostage Standoff

Hostage negotiators tried to talk a man into releasing a 5-year-old boy and ending a standoff in an underground bunker on Thursday. The man is accused of pulling the boy from a school bus and killing the driver on Tuesday.

5. Triaminic and Theraflu Recalled

More than 2 million containers of Triaminic and Theraflu Warning Relief syrups have been recalled by Novartis Consumer Health because the child resistant caps can be removed by kids with the seal still in place.
