IndyCar Series champion Dario Franchitti fractured two vertebrae, broke his right ankle and sustained a concussion when his car went airborne in the final lap of the Grand Prix of Houston on Sunday. Flying debris from the crash injured 13 bystanders.

Two off-duty New York police officers were riding with the biker group whose members allegedly assaulted an SUV driver in New York City, and the NYPD is investigating why the cops apparently did not intervene, authorities said.

4. Syrian Troops Reopen Key Road

The Syrian government forces have reopened a vital road that's been closed since August, linking the central heartland with the northern province Aleppo.

5. Newtown Votes to Rebuild Sandy Hook Elementary

The residents of Newtown, Conn., voted to raze and rebuild the Sandy Hook Elementary School where 26 people were killed last December. The town will be allotted $50 million in state funds to rebuild the school.
