Tornado Causes Heavy Damage in Coal City, Illinois

The storm damaged homes, brought down power lines and left roadways flooded.

According to a news release by Coal City’s Fire and EMS, flooding left many roadways impassable, and search crews worked to remove people from their homes. This morning, crews expect to assess the storm damage.

No fatalities or serious injuries were reported due to the storm, Coal City Police Sgt. Tom Logan told ABC News, but many buildings, including the fire department, suffered substantial damage.

“Houses that were there once are just not there anymore,” Logan said.

An emergency shelter was established at the Coal City High School, which is located at 650 W. Division St.

A tornado was previously reported in Coal City in 2013.
