Ulysses Grant Busted in Philly (and Theodore Roosevelt, Too)
Men with dead presidents' names charged in Philadelphia.
-- Two men with the names of dead presidents reportedly have been arrested in Philadelphia: Ulysses Grant and Theodore Roosevelt Gaines.
Ulysses Grant, 28, told ABC News he's not guilty of the drug possession charges of which the Philadelphia Police have accused him.
Grant, who does not yet have an attorney, said it all started when he was buying a bottle of water and $2 worth of candy from a store.
"I was coming out of a store and once they searched me they brought me to a house that had crack and forced me to sign a paper," said Grant, who said he planned to fight the charges Tuesday during a court hearing.
Grant admitted to carrying a weapon involving a blade and a stun gun on Dec. 10, but not drugs.
The Philadelphia Police said he was charged with possession with intent to deliver narcotics, but nothing related to a weapon.
Grant said that he's the fourth generation that carries the name of the 18th president since his great-grandfather.
Another man named Theodore Roosevelt Gaines was arrested for an unrelated retail theft, as first noted by Philadelphia Daily News reporter Dana DiFilippo.
Gaines, 49, of Roslyn, Pennsylvania, was seen with various store items at the Fresh Grocer totaling $119.75, according to the Philadelphia Police, on Sunday at 11 a.m. local time. Police Officer Jillian Russell said the station will not release a booking photo of Gaines, who did not respond to a request for comment, for a retail theft charge. Russell did not have details of the items he allegedly took.
Russell said Gaines was detained by security until police arrived and arrested him.
