Woman Struck by Bat at Fenway Park Suffers Life-Threatening Injuries
A woman was injured when she was struck by a bat at Fenway.
-- A woman suffered life-threatening injuries when she was struck in the head by a bat at Fenway Park in Boston Friday night that came in "like a bullet," according to police and a witness.
The woman was sitting with her husband and her son during the game between the Red Sox and the Oakland A's when she was struck by the stray bat around 7:40 p.m., Officer Rachel McGuire of the Boston Police Department told ABC News.
The incident happened when Brett Lawrie of the A's broke his bat during the second inning.
One witness, who was not named, told ABC News affiliate WCVB that she was five rows behind the woman who was struck.
"It was like a bullet coming in - hit me in arm and leg… then bounced," the witness said, according to the station. A man ripped his shirt off and tried to stop the bleeding until medics arrived, the station said.
The woman, had been sitting in one of the first few rows, was rushed to Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital.
Police could not immediately say how old she was.
She was hit when Oakland's Brett Lawrie broke his bat on a groundout to second base for the second out of the inning.
The Red Sox did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
