Edgewater Fire: Yankees Announcer John Sterling 'Lost Everything' in Massive Apartment Complex
John Sterling lost World Series rings and Emmy trophies.
— -- Approximately 500 people have been permanently displaced after a massive fire destroyed 240 units in a luxury apartment complex in New Jersey on Wednesday.
Residents who lived at The Avalon at Edgewater in the city of Edgewater, New Jersey lost everything, including New York Yankees Announcer John Sterling.
“I along with everyone else lost everything I have ever owned,” Sterling told ABC News via phone this afternoon.
In addition to his home and the memories he and his family created there, Sterling lost a lot of sentimental items such as “a lot of pictures of my kids,” the 12 Emmys he won from the television show Yankeeography, as well as the “World Series rings outside of the one that I was wearing and every stitch of my clothes.”
The fire started Wednesday afternoon and quickly grew, causing the need for 500 first responders from 35 towns in New Jersey and New York, Edgewater Mayor Michael McPartland told reporters.
Some people were stuck and rescued from balconies, but luckily, everyone survived.
Sterling realizes “there are some good things” about the fire including “hearing from a thousand people across the country [and] everyone in the business and all my friends and it is so heartwarming.”
