New Yorkers Try to Bring in Cold Cash With Airbnb Igloo Rental
Did you go stir-crazy or feel a surge of adventure during the blizzard?
-- Did you go stir-crazy in your home or feel a surge of adventure during the blizzard?
Well, an Airbnb listing posted on Sunday would have suited your fancy - if you were quick enough to catch it before it was pulled down.
A New Yorker in Brooklyn’s Greenpoint neighborhood promised a "Boutique Winter Igloo for 2" at $200 a night. Built in a backyard following the historic blizzard that dumped almost 27 inches of snow in New York City, the ad promised the "snowpocalypse's most desirable getaway."
"Built completely by hand all natural. Come experience this chic dome-style bungalow," the post said.
The igloo's owner Patrick Horton says he built it with his roommates and it took about 6 hours to construct.
But it only took Airbnb a few hours to catch on to Horton's humor. An email from the company informed him the post had been deleted late Sunday evening, shortly after it went up.
"We are happy to see that you guys are staying busy and having fun during Blizpocalypse," an Airbnb rep wrote Horton. "Unfortunately, your igloo, while very well constructed, has failed to meet our occupancy standards and has been removed from search results."
Airbnb was not immediately available for comment.
Horton said their ad wasn’t a complete prank and he was ready to really rent it out, adding that five people contacted him. He also isn’t done advertising his igloo.
"We are still planning on posting it on Craigslist possibly tonight," he said.
