July 30, 2010 -- It has been a contentious week in the immigration debate, as a federal judge struck down most of the key provisions of Arizona's controversial immigration law.
Now, some Republicans are expressing support for an idea that many people call extreme; denying citizenship to U.S.-born children of illegal immigrants.
On Fox News Wednesday, Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., joined with some other Republicans, saying he supports the idea.
"They come here to drop a child," Graham said. "That attracts people here for all the wrong reasons."
Under the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, citizenship is granted to "all persons born or naturalized in the United States," which, Graham says, should be changed.
"We should change our Constitution and say if you come here illegally and you have a child, that child's automatically not a citizen," Graham said.
Critics call the suggestion radical and say that enacting any change is unlikely. Still, Graham's support for the idea is notable, as he's considered to be a more moderate, mainstream figure in the Republican Party.
