Stephanie Sy
ABC News' Asia Correspondent
-- Stephanie Sy is ABC News' Asia correspondent and is based in Beijing. She reports for all broadcasts and platforms, including "World News with Diane Sawyer," "Good Morning America" and "Nightline."
Before her assignment in Asia, Sy was a New York-based correspondent reporting for various broadcasts and platforms. She joined ABC News in 2003 as a correspondent in the London bureau assigned to NewsOne, the network's affiliate news service.
Sy has covered major international stories over the last several years, including the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq and the ensuing war. She was embedded with the Navy and Army in Bahrain, Kuwait and Iraq during major combat operations and later covered Saddam Hussein's trial and the U.S. military's push into insurgent-held Fallujah.
Sy covered Pope John Paul II's death from Rome and was part of ABC News' award-winning coverage of that event. She also reported on the London bombings in July 2005, Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's stroke and the Athens and Turin Olympics. Domestically, she has recently reported on the foiled terror plot in Fort Dix, N.J., commencement at Virginia Tech, the Amish school shooting in Nickel Mines, Pa., and the funeral of President Ford.
Before joining ABC News, Sy was the military reporter and substitute anchor at WTKR-TV, the CBS affiliate in Norfolk, Va., from 2001-2003. While at the station, she won a Virginia Associated Press Continuous Coverage Award for her reporting on the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq.
She got her start in journalism at WBTW-TV, the CBS affiliate in Florence, S.C. She was a general assignment reporter and substitute news and weather anchor from 1999-2001.
Sy has a bachelor's degree in international relations and environmental studies from the University of Pennsylvania and is a native of California.
