July 23, 2008— -- Prostate cancer is the second-leading cancer killer of men after lung cancer. This year, an estimated 186,000 men in this country will be diagnosed with prostate cancer and about 28,000 will die from the disease.
A new study published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology found that the pill abiraterone shrank the size of tumors in men with advanced prostate cancer and doubled their rate of survival.
Many researchers in the medical community agree that the abiraterone, in phase III clinical trials, will produce promising results. Cougar Biotechnology Inc. of Los Angeles, the company which owns abiraterone, expects the drug to reach the market in 2011.
