'Such Good News to Report'

Jan. 29, 2007 — -- The following e-mails were sent to the ABC News staff to mark the one-year anniversary of the roadside attack near Baghdad which injured anchor Bob Woodruff and cameraman Doug Vogt. The first, titled "Bob and Doug," is from ABC News President David Westin, followed by a note from Vogt.

I first sent an e-mail with this title exactly one year ago, the day that our colleagues, Bob Woodruff and Doug Vogt, were injured in an IED attack in Iraq. None of us could have dreamed then that only a year later we would have such good news to report. Although they both have had some very difficult moments this year, I'm pleased to report today that both Bob and Doug have made incredible progress.

Bob is hard at work on a prime-time hour reporting what happened that day. Many of you have seen Bob around the office here in New York, and you can expect to see even more of him after the documentary airs on Feb. 27th.

Doug is helping train some of our colleagues in the art of shooting in the field, as well as taking classes to move us forward in the HDTV world. He's asked me to share the attached letter with all of you.

Since the attack on Bob and Doug, many of our colleagues have gone to Iraq to continue their reporting on this important but difficult story. We owe all of them, as well as Bob and Doug, our deep gratitude for the risks they have taken on our behalf. We remain committed to giving them our support and as much protection from danger as is humanly possible.

Vogt and Family 'Doing Great'

ABC Staff and Colleagues:

Jan. 29, and the year 2007, it has been quite the year for many of us. I just want to let you know how happy I am to be sitting here and talking about it. It seems easy to say now but there were times during the year when I asked myself how and why this had happened and why was I lucky to bounce back in such a fortunate manner.

There are often no answers to these questions. One has to open his eyes, dust himself off and move forward.

That's what I now want to say. I want to thank all of you for the help getting me here. The personal and professional time, talks, advice, suggestions and all your heartfelt appreciation and thought. It made it seem possible.

My family and I are doing great. We've hung in together and gotten stronger this year. We're looking forward to more challenges and adventure, an aspect of our lives that is at our core.

Thank you all so much. I can't wait to see and work with all of you again.
