Spike Lee's kids make history in new roles: 'We're proud to carry our father's legacy of storytelling'
They also spoke about what he instilled in them from a young age.
Spike Lee's kids, Satchel and Jackson, recently opened up on how they're following in his footsteps.
The duo, who were announced as the 2021 Golden Globe ambassadors on Tuesday, said when when it comes to judging their work, their father, 63, views it from a director's perspective.
"I remember I showed him something in school and he was like, 'I don't understand that shot there,'" Satchel, the legendary filmmaker's 26-year-old daughter, told Entertainment Tonight. "I think that was the last time I showed him something."
Jackson, 24, added, "I think what both my parents [Spike and producer Tonya Lewis Lee] instilled in us from a very early age is that anything you want, as long as you're willing to put in the work and dedication into it, you can make happen."
"I think my sister and I really embodied that and I think that's something we apply to all aspects to our lives." he continued.
Satchel and Jackson will make history as the 2021 Golden Globe ambassadors, as it is the first time two siblings of color have taken on the roles.
"We have been watching the Golden Globes since we can remember. We're proud to carry our father's legacy of storytelling to bring attention to communities close to our hearts," Satchel said in a statement when the announcement was made.
Jackson, who is also the award show's first Black male ambassador, recently directed the short film "Thompson Farms." His sister said she's "flirted with the idea of directing," but sees herself as more of a producer.
When it comes to following in their father's big footsteps, Satchel told ET, "I want to create a legacy or continue a legacy that [my parents] can be proud of, but I also need to be true to myself."
"I think whatever that truth is," she added, "really, will be in line with our father's legacy, our mother's legacy. It just sometimes can be tricky to figure it out -- but it all works out in the end."
