Khalid drops new album 'Free Spirit' and reveals he'd 'love' to work with Drake
The Grammy-nominated singer will kick off the Free Spirit stadium tour in June.
Khalid's sophomore album, "Free Spirit," has finally arrived and the young artist hailed his friends as the inspiration and motivation for his soulful songs.
"Honestly, over the past year feel like I've been working super hard on it," he told "GMA" about the new LP. "I really give it up to my friends because they're definitely the ones who inspire me and keep me going and keep me motivated. So I feel it's all of our experiences wrapped in one."
The 17-track album features previously released singles "Talk," "Self" and "Don't Pretend." Khalid steered much of the project on his own but the LP includes a guest track with John Mayer.
Khalid, who has previously collaborated with Calvin Harris, revealed the one artist who's next on his list -- Drake.
"I would love to work with Drake. He is super awesome," the singer said.
Serving as the follow-up to his debut "American Teen," which the 21-year-old described as a "very safe" project, "Free Spirit" is composed of more serious subject matter with sentimental undertones.
Khalid took a very solemn approach to the record's production and the opening track, "Intro."
The 12th track, "Twenty-One," is an apparent sequel to his debut album’s "8TEEN" which celebrated the freedom of youthful love. "Twenty-One" is a plea for companionship, with Khalid crying out: “I’m in pain, and I’m to blame."
In conjunction with the "Free Spirit" release, tickets for the Grammy-nominated R&B crooner's North American stadium tour, which kicks off in Phoenix June 20, went on sale Friday.
