Teen Dies in Crash En Route to High School Water Polo Tournament

— -- A 19-year-old died when a van carrying a girls high school water polo team and family members collided with a tractor-trailer while headed to a water polo tournament in Ohio.

The crash happened this morning when the van driver allegedly failed to yield the right-of-way and pulled out in front of the truck, the Henry County Sheriff's Office said. The vehicles collided and both went into a ditch.

One van passenger, 19-year-old Courtney Fisher, died at the scene, the Sheriff's Office said.

A Sheriff's Office spokeswoman said it appears Fisher was not a water polo player.

The driver and four girls, ages 14, 14, 15 and 17, were hospitalized with life-threatening injuries, the Sheriff's Office said. The truck driver was not injured.

Worthington Schools Superintendent Trent Bowers said water polo teams from two district schools were traveling to an out-of-town tournament when the accident occurred. He said the van carrying players and family members from Worthington Kilbourne High School.

"We are in the process of ensuring that our families involved are getting the support and resources that they need," Bowers said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the families."
