Democrats and Republicans failed to reach an agreement on how to keep the government funded, forcing the country into its first government shutdown in 17 years.

2. Rock Slide Kills 5 Hikers
A rock slide in Colorado's Chalk Creek Canyon killed five hikers and injured a sixth.

3. No Trouble Reported Before Calif. Jet Crash
The pilot of the private jet that crashed into a Santa Monica hangar reported no mechanical trouble beforehand, federal investigators said.
