How to get Emma Stone's Vogue look.

June 23, 2012 — -- Well, well, well: who's gone and snagged their first Vogue but Ms. Emma Stone? We covered the starlet's sultry debut on the front of the glossy last week before the powers that be at the mag officially released the photos within. The spread, shot by Mario Testino, is lovely, but it's the cover image alone that had me gawking. Emma's makeup — smudgily lined eyes, flushed cheeks, and petal pink lips — is the perfect pumped-up natural (you know, "natural") look for any occasion on basically anybody. Naturally, I couldn't resist breaking it down.1. Prep the skin with a primer followed by your usual tinted moisturizer or light foundation, depending on how much coverage you need. Prime your lids with a separate eye primer (like Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion, $20). I like and recommend high-end products, but they can all easily be replaced by their drugstore counterparts.

2. Groom your eyebrows (if you don't know how, check out my video tutorial, but don't laugh) and fill them in if desired. I like to use a powder for the most natural look. I'm a really big fan of Chanel's brow powder, but for a more reasonable option, try Maybelline Ultra Brow Brush-On Color, $5.98.

3. Begin the eyes by using your finger to apply a bronzy cream shadow (like Benefit Creaseless Cream Shadow/Liner in Top Brass, $19) over the lid. Blend it well into the lash line. Blend it thoroughly so that it's more concentrated near the lash line and fades into a smoky finish around the edges. You can pull it out a bit in the outer corner into a subtle cat-eye shape.

4. Once your shadow is in place, you'll use a soft black liner (like Stila Smudge Stick, $20) next. The key to this look is that Emma's eyes aren't lined all the way around, which can close the eye and make it appear smaller. Instead, position the pencil so that it catches the inside rim of the eye, lining the inside of the top lid from the very inner corner outward. Go over it a few times in the same manner, thickening the line each time so that it blends onto the lash line as well as the inner rim. Now, you'll want to line the inner rim of the bottom lid the same way, but only halfway from the outside, leaving the inside half bare. You can blend the line gently with your ring finger on the edges so that it doesn't look too stark. Blend the outer corners to meet as well, creating a singular shape. If pencil tends to run on you (it does for me), retrace the line you've made on the lash lines with a waterproof liquid liner.

6. Emma's editorial look has a lot of visible blush involved, but for real life you'll want to use a light hand to avoid looking clownish. I like to use a cream blush (in a pinkish beige shade like Too Faced Full Bloom Lip & Cheek Color in Tempting Tea Rose, $21) because it creates a natural, dewy look that blends easily and can be built upon. Using your ring finger, swirl a small amount of blush onto the apples of cheeks, blending up and out towards the temples. Layer for intensity.

7. If you're going out for the night or want to make sure things stay in place over the workday, set your skin with an invisible powder (like Make Up For Ever HD Microfinish Powder, $32) on your T-zone, where things tend to get oily and slide, using a super-soft kabuki brush. Tip: after dipping the brush in the powder, blow on it gently to ensure too much doesn't end up in one place.

8. Emma is wearing a matte lipstick here, but as they tend to be drying, it's more functional to use a comfortable formula then dust powder over it to mattify. Clinique Chubby Stick Moisturizing Lip Color Balm in Mighty Mimosa, a sheer natural pink, $16, is perfect for this pretty, pinched look. Et voilà! Next, we steal Emma's lovely raspy voice. Or try to. Something tells me she might want to keep it.
