— -- Good Morning America” co-anchor Robin Roberts got a backstage look at “Last Man Standing,” the hit ABC family comedy starring Tim Allen and Nancy Travis.

Roberts guest-stars in tonight’s episode of the show, playing a woman interested in purchasing military collectibles from Allen's character.

In between dress rehearsals and wardrobe fittings, Roberts spoke with Allen, who stars as Mike Baxter, and his former “Home Improvement” co-star, Patricia Richardson, who is a also guest star on tonight's episode.

“I have said it many times, she has taught me so much about acting,” Allen said of Richardson. “She's really an actor, and she comes on and you have the history with us, but when she stands here she's an actress.”

“But now, he's been doing so much more than me,” Richardson said of Allen, who played her husband on “Home Improvement.” “I keep retiring and going away and coming back.... Now I’m like, alright, what should I be doing?”

Nancy Travis plays Allen’s wife, Vanessa Baxter, on “Last Man Standing." She gave Roberts a run-down of what it takes to get each episode on the air.

“We start a new script every Wednesday,” Travis said. “We read it and then rehearse it and we come back in on Thursday, rework what we've done, come back in on Friday, start over, rework it."

"It takes a full five days to produce the polished product that you see Robin pulling off in 20 minutes," Travis said with a laugh.

When it came time for Roberts and the cast to film before a live studio audience, it was Allen who explained why the cast and crew work so hard.

“We do this all because we love doing it for you guys,” Allen told the crowd.

"Last Man Standing" airs Fridays at 8 p.m. EST on ABC.
