Shakira Welcomes a Son

The singer, 37, and her soccer player boyfriend Gerard Piqué, 27, have welcomed their second son, Sasha Piqué Mebarak, she announced Friday. The baby was born on Jan. 29 at 9:54 p.m. in Barecelona.

“The name Sasha is of Greek and Russian descent and means ‘defender of mankind’ and ‘warrior,'” she wrote on her website. “The hospital confirmed that both mother and child are in excellent health.”

The parents first broke the news of their second pregnancy in late August.

"Yes, we are expecting our second baby!! Thank you all for your well wishes!" she tweeted at the time.

Baby Sasha joins big brother Milan, who was born in January 2013. His name, like his little brother's, held great sentimental meaning for the couple, who was first linked in 2011.

“The name Milan, means dear, loving and gracious in Slavic; in Ancient Roman, eager and laborious; and in Sanskrit, unification,” a statement read at the time of the birth. “Just like his father, baby Milan became a member of FC Barcelona at birth."
