3 new 'Star Wars' films announced, including Daisy Ridley's return as Rey
Ridley will return as Rey in a film directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy.
"Star Wars" fans have a lot to look forward to.
Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy announced Friday at Star Wars Celebration in London that three new live-action films are on the way, saying the plan is to "expand the past, the present and the future" of the franchise.
At the helm of these films are James Mangold, who directed "Logan" and is directing the forthcoming "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny"; Dave Filoni, a veteran of the "Star Wars" universe across numerous projects; and two-time Academy Award winner Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, who recently directed two "Ms. Marvel" episodes for Marvel.
Mangold's film will take "Star Wars" fans "into the deep past, telling the tale of the first Jedi to wield the Force and harvest its liberating power in an era of chaos and oppression," Kennedy said.
Kennedy teased Filoni's project as one that will "bring together many of the threads of our series in that cinematic event that we've been promising you." He will be working with Jon Favreau on the film.
As for Obaid-Chinoy's film, Kennedy said it's set 15 years after 2019's "The Rise of Skywalker" and will "tell the story of the rebuilding of the new Jedi Order and the powers that rise to tear it down."
Daisy Ridley, who played Rey in the most recent "Star Wars" trilogy, will star in the film. Ridley herself appeared on stage at Star Wars Celebration and said she is "very thrilled to be continuing this journey."
Disney is the parent company of ABC News and "Good Morning America."
