Ciara says she's 'truly grateful' to join 'The Color Purple' movie musical

The singer joins a cast that includes Fantasia, Danielle Brooks and more.

Ciara is the latest celebrity to be added to the star-studded roster of the upcoming movie musical, "The Color Purple."

The Grammy winner will play the adult version of Nettie while Halle Bailey plays the younger Nettie, according to Entertainment Weekly. Nettie is the protective little sister of Celie, who will be portrayed by Fantasia.

Ciara reacted on Twitter by writing, "Honored to be a part of this beautiful ensemble and historic film, The Color Purple. Truly grateful."

The film adaptation of the award-winning Broadway musical is currently in production in Georgia, according to an Instagram post shared Monday by director Blitz Bazawule. Oprah Winfrey, Quincy Jones and Steven Spielberg, among others, are producing.

Other notable cast members include Danielle Brooks as Sofia as well as Taraji P. Henson, Colman Domingo, H.E.R. and Corey Hawkins.

"The Color Purple" is set to premiere in 2023.
