Renée Zellweger stars as Judy Garland in the upcoming biopic about the legendary late singer's life, "JUDY."

The Rupert Goold-directed film, premiering Sept. 27, takes place in 1968 and "celebrates the voice, the capacity for love and the sheer pizzazz of “the world’s greatest entertainer," according to film studio Pathe UK.

Garland was tremendously successful throughout her career, starring in classics like 1939's "The Wizard of Oz," 1944's "Meet Me in St. Louis," 1948's "Easter Parade" and 1954's "A Star Is Born." She died in 1969 at age 47 from an accidental drug overdose.

New images featuring Zellweger's transformation into the late icon were recently released.

Zellweger described her experience playing Garland to People magazine.

“It was such a joy learning about the magnificence of this person,” she said. “I always admired her. She was so quick and so funny. She could hit the ball back with the best of them.”
