'One Tree Hill' superfans get the proposal of their dreams with help from the show's stars
Sophia Bush and Hilarie Burton were there to help!
Two "One Tree Hill" superfans recently got the engagement story of their dreams with some help from the stars of the show.
Alison Briggs, 23, proposed to her girlfriend Cydney Childers, 20, at a “Weekend in Tree Hill” charity fundraiser in Tree Hill, North Carolina on Sunday.
The big event took place while the two were doing a photo opp with Hilarie Burton, who played Peyton Sawyer on the hit CW show, and Sophia Bush, who played Brooke Davis.Burton and Bush were actually in on the proposal idea, and had been contacted by Briggs months before.
Briggs, who is based in Canada, started planning the proposal for Childers, who lives in Boulder, Colorado, in October 2018.
Briggs created a Twitter account and repeatedly contacted the two actresses until she eventually heard back from Bush.
"Sophia saw it and reached out to me," she told "Good Morning America." "She said that they'd be willing to support me and cheer me on in any way."
She connected with Burton through actor Antwon Tanner, who also starred in the show, and who she had met at conventions for "One Tree Hill" fans.
"I had it planned that I would ask Hilarie what her favorite quote from the show is, and she would then say the quote '6 billion people in the world. 6 billion souls. And sometimes, all you need is one,'" Briggs shared. "Then I would propose, and she did it! It went perfectly."
"It was crazy. I had no idea at all that it was going to happen -- that she was going to propose," Childers said. "Having those two people be there -- that I literally love -- we've both loved them for over 10 years, so it was really just the most insane thing."
"Both of them were so supportive and sweet. It was so cool. Sophia Bush cried, which was crazy to me," Childers continued.
"I cannot even believe that they cared so much and were so ready to support us in this way," she added.
Childers and Briggs say the show has been extremely impactful in their relationship -- it's the reason they met in 2015.
"We both just started tweeting about 'One Tree Hill' and kind of found each other through Twitter that way," Childers shared. "We eventually both joined this group chat for Hilarie Burton fans, which is kind of how we started talking."
"It has just such touching story lines, and a lot of characters are super relatable. I very much relate to Peyton and being a little sad all the time," Briggs added with a laugh.
Childers also found that she could identify with the story lines and characters on the show.
"I always thought it was interesting that they're in really non-relatable scenarios -- they're all like famous and writers and actors and whatever they're doing -- and still at the heart, all the characters are so relatable, even though the situations are so out there," she said.
"I started watching the show with my mom when I was so young. I was probably about 9 or so, and that was something we did together," she added. "It kind of always meant something to me in that respect, and I just absolutely love the story as well."
Briggs also wrote that the show comforted her in her "darkest hours" and gave her "a place to call home," in an Instagram post.
After the proposal, the coupled shared that Burton congratulated them "a billion times" and even jokingly asked them to name their first child after her.
"It was a HUGE honor today to be a part of this beautiful couple’s engagement!!" Burton tweeted. "Alison, thank you for including @SophiaBush and me. We are so happy for you lovebirds!!!!! Xoxoxo."
The two have not set a date and are planning to have an extended engagement.
