Feb. 11, 2011 — -- I'm Matt Bean from "Men's Health" here with five ways to keep the number one resolution people make every year – lose weight and go to the gym.

First, make multiple resolutions, not just one. In a recent study, those who had embraced multiple heart-healthy changes were 20 percent more likely to have stuck with them.

Second, give yourself daily reminders. Signing up for newsletters and getting weekly diet and exercise advice is a great reminder to boost your physical activity and eat smarter.

Third, don't be so hard on yourself! If you're having trouble fitting in three or four workouts every week, just cut your gym days down to two.

Number four, find the *right* motivation. Roughly 80 percent of smokers admit they would like to quit, but only about three percent make an actual effort. Find a potent motivator that lets you measure the impact of your effort beyond yourself and it will fuel you to stay the course when you're inclined to cheat.

And last but not least, if you *really* want to see change, then change your thought process about what your goal is! It's not "losing 15 pounds," it's getting fit!

Follow these five tips and you'll reach your goals, one day at a time.
