Jan. 13, 2010 -- Question: What is naturopathic medicine, what are some naturopathic remedies and are they truly effective?

Answer: Naturopathy is a complete medical system that was popularized in Europe in the 19th century. It was later brought to the United States, and it is gaining widespread popularity in this country.

Naturopathy emphasizes prevention in that it emphasizes the healing role of the body. There are some key principles of naturopathy -- that is, diet, healing power of nature itself.

If a person goes to a naturopathic physician, therefore, certain principles are emphasized. They may prescribe diet; they will prescribe whole foods, less processed foods. They will also prescribe certain vitamins, herbal supplements and changes in lifestyle, such as emphasizing meditation and exercise.

The thing about naturopathy is that is has many sensible principles, but does not by itself replace conventional care. It is worth emphasizing certain principles such as diet and health, so in that respect, I would support naturopathy as a whole.
