Oct. 8, 2007— -- Question from jgregor147:Is it safe to take black cohash with estrogen positive cancer? Also, what is out there to help lost libido in the estrogen positive cancer women? Thank you.

Response from Nagi Kumar, Ph.D., R.D., H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center & Research:Black Cohosh has been found to have both estrogenic/anti-estrogenic effects, This has been evaluated in laboratory studies, specifically looking at the effectiveness of this botanical supplement in women treated for estrogen-dependant breast cancer. The results indicated that it stimulated tumor growth and thus may not be safe for women with estrogen-dependent breast cancer. Due to its observed estrogenic effects, BC is also not recommended during pregnancy, lactation of for children.

In other clinical trials to examine the value of Black Cohosh to reduce menopausal symptoms – it was not found to be more efficacious than placebo against most menopausal symptoms.
