The world's getting hotter and the weather more extreme. There has been a huge uptick in the number — and severity — of weather events driven by climate change. Residents in Western New York had an extreme lake-effect snowstorm on Nov. 18-19, dropping up to 77 inches of snow in some areas. Hurricane Ian made landfall in southwestern Florida on Sept. 28, 2022 as a Category 4 hurricane with 150 mph winds. Ian claimed more than 100 lives, dumped over 28 inches of rain and resulted in record storm surges that devastated coastal communities. Flash flooding from heavy rains has destroyed homes, villages and crops, leaving many residents stranded and thousands displaced. Pakistani officials estimate the economic damage at $10 billion. <br><br> More than 1,160 people have been killed in flooding across Pakistan since mid-June, officials said on Aug. 31, 2022. Heavy rain, thunder and lightning have battered South Korea's central area since Aug. 8 2022, damaging thousands of buildings and roads, and killing nine people, according to the Korea Meteorological Administration. The area has received more than 5 inches of rain in an hour, setting the highest hourly rainfall rate for the region. Bangladesh is prone to monsoon rains and landslides, but officials are calling the extreme flooding that hit the northeast in mid-June 2022 the worst in more than a century. An atmospheric river, a narrow band of tropical moisture, inundated the Pacific Northwest in mid-June 2022. It brought several inches of rain to parts of northern Wyoming and southern Montana, coinciding with above-normal temperatures that caused snowmelt. Extreme rain and melting snow led to catastrophic flooding at Yellowstone National Park. Deemed one of the worst weather storms in the history of the country, devastating floods continue to wreak havoc in South Africa's KwaZulu-Natal province. <br><br> The disaster has claimed the lives of hundreds as some areas saw six months' worth of rainfall in one day. The India Meteorological Department forecast that the temperature in New Delhi would reach 107.2 degrees Fahrenheit on April 11, 2022. Swathes of northern and western India have experienced extreme temperatures in April, with Rajasthan, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh and New Delhi among the worst affected. Higher temperatures were also felt in relatively cooler Indian-controlled Kashmir in the Himalayas, where many Indians go to escape the summer heat. A record of at least 218 tornadoes touched down in the United States in March, according to the National Weather Service. One tornado outbreak alone caused nearly 70 twisters across five states: Texas, Mississippi, Alabama, Oklahoma and Louisiana. A megadrought that has been affecting the southwestern United States for at least two decades is causing the region to experience its driest conditions in 1,200 years, according to new research. In March, flooding stretched almost 1,000 miles along the eastern coast of Australia. Weeks of torrential downpours in parts of Queensland and New South Wales states swept away farms, drowned livestock and submerged roads, cutting off towns. Emergency services estimated that around 60,000 people in New South Wales were under evacuation orders, urging residents to follow them.
