Dancing Gorilla Shows Off His Moves
The 3-year-old gorilla was caught dancing at the Twycross Zoo.
— -- A 3-year-old gorilla at a U.K. zoo proved himself to be the king of the dance floor while zoo visitors watched on in amazement.
Lope, a Western lowland gorilla, lives at the Twycross Zoo in Leicestershire, England, with his parents, Ozala and Oumbi.
The gorilla was playing in his enclosure Monday when he kicked off a dance party of one. Lope’s unexpected and unabashed dancing was captured on video by zoo visitor Helen Fairhead, who later posted the video on YouTube.
The zoo’s Great Ape Team Leader told ABC News by email the playful dancing is a sign of Lope’s youth.
“He celebrated his 3rd birthday in January and play is a very important aspect of behavior for young apes, both in zoos and the wild,” Simon Childs wrote. “Visitors to Twycross Zoo can see Lope playing like this very often.”
Lope’s moves got so much attention he was discussed on “Good Morning America” Wednesday alongside “Dancing With the Stars” competitor Ginger Zee.
