Judy Blume Saves the Day After Husband Accidentally Tosses Wife’s 'Irreplaceable' Book

— -- Famed author Judy Blume might want to add “miracle worker” to her resume.

It’s safe to say she single-handedly saved this Brooklyn, New York, man’s marriage after he accidentally tossed his wife’s “irreplaceable” copy of Blume’s classic book, “Are You There, God? It’s Me, Margaret.”

The husband’s fateful mistake happened on July 25, a day his wife will never forget.

“I accidentally gave this book away on Saturday July 25th in a box on the corner of Green and Franklin Streets in Greenpoint,” Lenny Lasek desperately wrote on flyers he posted all over their neighborhood in hopes of getting it back. “The book is extremely important to my wife. It was a keepsake from her mother and is irreplaceable. On the inside cover is a note that reads ‘Christmas 1991.’ If you happened to pick up this book can you please get in touch with me.”

The book is so special to Lasek’s wife, Katie, because her mother died when she was young.

“She passed away over 10 years ago,” Lasek wrote to ABC News. “[It’s] One of the first books she got. And wrote a nice note in it. She’s brought it with her everywhere for the last 25 years and reads it once a year.”

The couple only just got married in June and is currently traveling in the Austrian Alps for a family wedding. While they’ve been gone, the flyers pleading to find the book have made their rounds on social media, eventually getting the attention of Blume herself.

“Oh no tragic!,” the author tweeted Thursday when she heard the news. “Will send signed copy. Not the same, I know. Let's hope it saves the marriage. Not sure I can find that cover but will try.”

The newlyweds were blown away by Blume’s kindness and immediate response.

“I’ve had direct contact with her. Way beyond anything I ever imagined,” Lasek explained. “Very touched Judy would respond like she did.”

Blume is currently traveling on vacation also, but her assistant tells ABC News that this “story has really touched everyone including them.”

“We're working on finding the exact cover,” Joanne Brennan, Blume’s assistant, added. “Either way, we all want a happy ending!”

Sadly, the original copy of the book is “still at large,” Lasek wrote, but he’s happy to report that at least the “wife has forgiven me.”
