Diamondbacks land Mark Trumbo

— -- LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- The Los Angeles Angels, Chicago White Sox and Arizona Diamondbacks have agreed to a three-team trade that would send Mark Trumbo to Arizona, Adam Eaton to Chicago and pitchers Hector Santiago and Tyler Skaggs to Los Angeles.

Arizona also will receive a player to be named later -- likely withheld because at least one will be exposed in Thursday's Rule 5 draft -- or cash from each of the other clubs.

In addition, the Diamondbacks have offered a one-year deal to right-hander  Joba Chamberlain for close to $3 million, a source told ESPN's Buster Olney. Chamberlain was 2-1 with a 4.93 ERA for the  New York Yankees last season.

Trumbo has hit more than 30 home runs in each of his past two seasons. He batted .234 with 34 home runs and 100 RBIs this past season while hitting in one of the more pitcher-friendly parks in baseball. He will play left field for the Diamondbacks and along with Paul Goldschmidt will give the team considerable right-handed power.

Trumbo said Tuesday night that he was used to hearing his name in trade talk.

"I think it's been rumored for years now," he said. "I knew that this one was a serious thing."

The White Sox acquire a young everyday center fielder and leadoff hitter in Eaton, who went into 2013 as a rookie of the year candidate but missed most of the season with a knee injury. He batted .252 with a .314 on-base percentage and 44 runs scored.

Tweeted Eaton of the trade:

Pumped to be a part of the @whitesox organization! Excited to get after winning the #ALCentral. Thank you for this incredible opportunity!

"We weren't going to move Hector just for the sake of moving him, just for the sake of making a move and being able to plug somebody into the lineup," White Sox general manager Rick Hahn said. "This was a pretty targeted strike on Adam Eaton and there was a few other similar names we were discussing Hector with and it was for similar players who we feel are long-term fits.

"Obviously the No. 1 goal of this trade was to acquire Adam Eaton. That allows us to balance out the lineup, get a guy at the top of the order who's going to get on base, bring some energy."

White Sox manager Robin Ventura said the acquisition of Eaton addresses a need.

"Toward the end of the season and going into the offseason, you're looking at what you'd like to have, and this is one of those moves you target. [Hahn] has been high on Eaton, and it's the kind of piece that you like," he said. "We were a little right-handed heavy. It balances it out, and you get a good baseball player out of it. You have to give up something good. That's never easy because [Santiago] was real good for us for a couple of years."

The Angels acquired the pitching depth they have been seeking after finishing last season 24th in ERA and a disappointing third in the AL West.

Santiago, 25, was 4-9 with a 3.56 ERA for the White Sox last season. He has often struggled with his control, walking 72 batters in 149 innings.

Angels general manager Jerry Dipoto said Santiago and Skaggs are targeted for the starting rotation.

"Right now, they are both [in the rotation] for us, but there is a lot of time before Opening Day," Dipoto said. "One thing we like about Santiago is his versatility, as he's had some success in the pen."

Skaggs, a 22-year-old lefty from Santa Monica, Calif., is a former first-round pick of the Angels who was traded in 2010 to acquire Dan Haren. Skaggs spent most of last season at Triple-A and went 2-3 with a 5.12 ERA in seven starts for the Diamondbacks.

This is the second time that Dipoto, who formerly worked for the Diamondbacks, has traded for Skaggs.

"He's 22 and athletic with a three-pitch mix," Dipoto said. "Like a lot of guys who debuted so young, he's just cutting his teeth in the majors, and we believe in his upside."
