Josh Heupel out as Oklahoma OC

— -- Josh Heupel is out as Oklahoma's offensive coordinator after spending the past nine years as an assistant coach with the Sooners.

Heupel, who also was an All-American quarterback for the Sooners, announced the move Tuesday in a statement on his Twitter account.

"It has been an honor to be a part of The University of Oklahoma for 14 years," Heupel said in the statement. "Oklahomans and Sooner fans have embraced me as a coach and as a player, including that magical National Championship season."

Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops is expected to formally announce Heupel's firing during a news conference later Tuesday morning. Oklahoma's coaching staff has faced recent scrutiny after the Sooners' 8-5 season, punctuated by their 40-6 loss to  Clemson in the Russell Athletic Bowl.

Oklahoma wide receivers coach Jay Norvell also won't return, a source confirmed to ESPN's Joe Schad.

Heupel has spent the past four seasons as the Sooners' offensive coordinator. He was the Heisman Trophy runner-up in 2000, when he led the undefeated Sooners to a victory over Florida State in the national championship game.
