Source: Duce Staley interviews for Eagles' vacant coaching job

— -- The Philadelphia Eagles have interviewed former running back Duce Staley for their vacant coaching position, a league source told ESPN's Ed Werder.

Staley, who currently serves as the Eagles' running backs coach, interviewed for the job less than 48 hours after Philadelphia fired coach Chip Kelly on Tuesday, the source told Werder.

Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie acknowledged Wednesday that he fired Kelly before the season ended in order to start the process of finding a new coach. Lurie said he hasn't ruled out offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur, who will serve as the Eagles' interim coach for Week 17 against the Giants, or any members of Philadelphia's current staff as candidates.

Staley, who played seven seasons with the Eagles, is a known favorite of Lurie. The interview also helps the Eagles meet the requirements of the NFL's Rooney Rule, which mandates the inclusion of minority candidates being interviewed before franchise's can complete the hiring process.

Staley, 40, rushed for 4,807 yards and had three 1,000-yard seasons with the Eagles from 1997 to 2003. He also played parts of three seasons with the Steelers from 2004 to 2006.

After officially retiring as a member of the Eagles in 2007, Staley joined Philadelphia's coaching staff in 2010. He was promoted to running backs coach in 2013.
