Yasiel Puig (thumb) day-to-day
— -- Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Yasiel Puig sat out of Sunday's 6-2 win over the San Francisco Giants with a strained left thumb ligament that was initially injured when he slid headfirst into first base on Saturday.
Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said after Sunday's game that he thought Puig's injury would be more of a "day-to-day thing" rather than something that would require a trip to the disabled list.
Puig jammed his thumb sliding headfirst into first base on an infield single in the third inning on Saturday. He was able to stay in and finish Saturday's game after being examined by the Dodgers trainers but was held out of Sunday's game when he showed up to the ballpark with soreness and swelling in the thumb. The Dodgers sent him for an MRI, which revealed the strain.
"We'll know a lot more not necessarily from the results, but just how he feels tomorrow and as the strength comes back in there," Mattingly said.
There is a good chance Puig will play Tuesday against the Detroit Tigers if the swelling and soreness improves. The Dodgers have an off day on Monday.
Puig sat in the Dodger dugout for most of Sunday's game with a brace on his left thumb. Mattingly said Puig normally wears a protective wrap on his thumb to protect against this very injury --which he's suffered on two separate occasions -- but he wasn't wearing it on the play where he got injured because he doesn't wear it while hitting.
Mattingly said the Dodgers have tried to caution Puig and all their players against sliding headfirst into first base -- something utilityman Nick Punto did often last season -- but "it's hard to stop guys from doing what they do kind of naturally."
