June 24, 2010— -- The iPhone 4 is finally here. The most highly anticipated gadget since Apple's last big release arrives in stores today. And it could be Apple's biggest hit yet. The company says it took a record number of pre-orders for the device. But it's not all good news. The white version won't be available until late next month because of manufacturing challenges. And there are scattered reports of defective screens from people who received their phones a day early.

Verizon and Motorola rolled out their latest challenge to the iPhone yesterday. The Droid X runs on Google's Android software and has a large 4.3 inch screen, 8-megapixel camera, and records high-definition video. There will be new video apps designed to take advantage of the large screen, including one from Blockbuster for buying and renting movies. And it connects to TVs so users can watch content from the phone on a bigger screen. The Droid X goes on sale July 15th, for $200 with a two-year contract.

About eight months after Gourmet Magazine was shut down, it's coming back as an app. Publisher Conde Nast is launching Gourmet Live for the iPad and other mobile gadgets. Users will be able to share recipes and dig into Gourmet's archives of old recipes. The New York Times' Nick Bilton says this is this one of several apps changing the way we think about magazines. "I also think that we're gonna start to see people really push the boundaries with what these applications can be as they did with the Gourmet application, which is not just a magazine but it's also an interactive game," Bilton said. The app will be free and available in the fourth quarter of this year.

Skype wants to connect soccer fans around the world. The internet phone service is offering a month of free landline calls to all countries that qualified for the World Cup. So if you know anyone in Ghana, you can call to taunt them ahead of the United States' big game against them on Saturday.
