— -- More so than ever, Americans are coming out on Facebook.

A report from Facebook's Research and Data Science division that "not only has the total number of Americans who have come out on Facebook risen dramatically, but so has the number coming out each day."

The study was conducted using aggregated, de-identified information from users in the United States. Over the past year, approximately 800,000 people updated their profile to include a same-gender attraction or entered a custom gender, putting the number of people coming out on Facebook each day on track to be three times what it was one year ago, researchers said.

A surge in pride was observed on June 26 when the U.S. Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage nationwide. Twice as many people as the previous year changed their "interested in" status to reflect a same-gender interest. In the following days, 26 million people also celebrated the decision by adding a rainbow filter to their profile photo.

More than 6 million Americans are out on Facebook, though Facebook's report noted that number is likely an underestimate, since it only measures people who change their "interested in" status or choose a custom gender.
