Walmart offers new prepaid MiFi service

— -- Are you one of the many folks out there who would love to use your laptop's Internet while on the go, but just can't justify the high monthly fees associated with MiFi mobile hotspot service? Well, if you have more of a nibble philosophy to your mobile Internet use (as opposed to a chew, or even gobble one), then you're precisely the target of Walmart's new offering: prepaid MiFi service starting at just $10.

While that initial investment is low — less than the cost of two fast food dinners — there are some drawbacks to the offer. Notably, the per megabyte cost is a bit high: That $10 investment only buys you 100MB of data, and you're stuck using Sprint's notoriously low-speed 3G network to boot.

You get a better deal prepaying $45 for 1GB, though, and 450MB automatic refills will cost you $20 each if you opt-in to them.

Of course, the good news is that once you buy your chunk of data, it's yours to keep to use as you see fit without suffering monthly fees making it ideal for an emergency back-up device while traveling.

And your data doesn't expire, so long as you use the service once a year.

The MiFi dongle itself costs $120, and is available in Walmart stores or at Walmart.com. For more details on the service itself, you can check out the Internet on the Go website.
