— -- New York visitors can work off holiday pounds and help power Manhattan's famed New Year's Eve celebration at the same time.

From Tuesday until the end of December, anyone can stop by the Duracell Power Lodge in Times Square next to the Virgin Megastore, hop on a bicycle that resembles a snowmobile and pedal away. That energy will be stored in a big Duracell battery and by techno-wizardry will be used to light up the 2009 sign after the ball drops.

It'll take about 230 hours of pedal power to do the deed, says Rick June, vice president of Duracell North America. 400,000 cyclers are expected.
