Hero Who Stopped Train Attack in France Promoted to Staff Sergeant

— -- One of the heroes who thwarted an attack on a train traveling to Paris in August is getting a promotion in the Air Force.

Spencer Stone, an Air Force airman, will be promoted to Staff Sergeant effective Nov. 1, though Air Force regulations permit promotion the duty day prior if a promotion date falls on the weekend.

In a promotion ceremony on Friday at Travis Air Force Base in California, Stone was lauded for the leadership and courage he showed in August, when he and two friends stopped an attack on a train from Amsterdam to Paris.

Stone, 60th Medical Operations Squadron medical technician, underwent surgery to reattach his thumb that the attacker allegedly slashed with a box cutter.

Earlier this month, Stone suffered from three stab wounds to his torso when he was in a physical altercation in Sacramento, California. The Sacramento Police told ABC News that the investigation into the incident remains active and no suspects have been arrested. Police released sketches of two suspects on Oct. 17.
