While New Hampshire is known as a key stomping ground for presidential contenders, police say a suspected would-be robber planned to masquerade as President Donald Trump to do more than just knock on doors.

Michael Martel Jr., 30, was captured after leading New Hampshire police on a high-speed chase in a stolen truck and officers found a rubber Trump mask in the vehicle along with ammunition and burglary tools, officials said.

Barnstead, New Hampshire, police department said they received a tip late Sunday night that Martel was headed to their city to do a home invasion.

The tipster, according to police, claimed Martel was "coming to Barnstead with a gun to do a robbery/home invasion in retaliation for money owed from a previous drug deal," according to a statement from the Barnstead Police Department.

After receiving the tip, word went out to officers to be on the lookout for Martel, who was driving a stolen 2006 GMC 1500 pickup truck, police said.

Barnstead Officer Derik Bentencourt spotted Martel on Route 28 and attempted to pull him over, the statement reads. But the suspect sped off and a chase ensued that reached speeds of up to 100 miles per hour, police said.

"He put a lot of people in danger, there's no doubt about it. He wanted to get away for whatever reason," Barnstead Police Chief Paul Poirier told an ABC affiliate station WMUR-TV in Manchester, New Hampshire.

When the chase reached Chichester, New Hampshire, Martel crashed into a snowbank and fled on foot into the nearby woods, police said.

At least four law enforcement agencies from the area joined in the search for Martel, who was found by a New Hampshire State Police K-9 unit and taken into custody.

Poirier said the truck Martel was driving was stolen earlier Sunday in Concord, New Hampshire. He said at the time of his arrest, Martel was out on bail after recently being arrested by state police on charges of possessing a firearm with an obliterated serial number.

Besides the Trump mask, police also found a number of "suspicious items," including gloves, binoculars, flashlights, bolt cutters, screwdrivers, and an array of electronics and car stereos.

Martel was booked into jail on suspicion of felony receiving stolen property, resisting arrest, disobeying a police officer, reckless operation of a vehicle and possession of burglary tools.

He was being held Tuesday on $10,000 cash bail, pending a court hearing.

It was not immediately clear if Martel has obtained an attorney.
