Pope Benedict XVI was born Joseph Aloisius Ratzinger in Germany in 1927. Benedict became Pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church in 2005 and was the first German pope in 1000 years. Popes usually serve as a lifetime position. However, Benedict resigned in 2013, the first pope to resign since 1415. After his resignation, Benedict continued to live in Vatican Palace. Pope Benedict XVI died on Dec. 31, at the age of 95.
