Jon Gosselin's Cruel, Cruel Summer

Aug. 21, 2009 — -- After weeks of sub-average temperatures, sweltering summer weather has finally hit New York.

Unfortunately for one of the city's newest residents, Jon Gosselin (Maybe you've heard of him? He's on some reality show with a bunch of kids?), things haven't been so hot.

TLC, the network that airs "Jon & Kate Plus 8," the reality show that made Gosselin famous, has reportedly fallen out of love with the father of eight faster than did his soon-to-be ex-wife.

Earlier this week, TMZ.com reported that TLC (the network Gosselin's 22-year-old girlfriend, Hailey Glassman, recently dubbed "The Lying Channel") told the dad he may soon be freed of contractual agreements tethering him to the network. Apparently, producers don't think Gosselin's new hobbies -- bar-hopping and lady-wooing -- jibe with the intended family values of the show, whose ratings are falling.

Representatives for "Jon & Kate Plus 8" declined to comment on the reports. TMZ.com also claimed that Gosselin was being courted for a new TV gig -- a starring role in "Divorced Dad's Club," a series chronicling the lives of famous divorced fathers, currently being developed by reality-TV production giant Endemol.

But more bad news for Gosselin -- an Endemol spokeswoman told ABCNews.com the company is "absolutely not" in talks with Gosselin about participating in the show.

As his professional prospects plummet, Gosselin's personal life is falling on hard times, too. While he claims things are going great with Glassman, the daughter of the plastic surgeon who performed his estranged wife's tummy tuck, Kate Major, the Star magazine reporter with whom Gosselin palled around a few weeks ago, is hissing about his behavior.

The Real Losers: The Gosselin Kids

"Jon never wanted to use his credit card -- he was worried that he'd get caught or spotted," Major told the latest issue of Life & Style magazine. "On July 20, we went to a hotel in New Jersey. I paid for the room, and he snuck up a back way. That was the first time we slept together. He said he was falling in love with me. He said, 'I thought Hailey was perfect until I met you.'"

Major, who quit her job at Star after falling for Gosselin while working on a story about him, added that once Gosselin lost interest in the "pretty much sexual" relationship, he told her he needed to be single and sent her a text message reading, "Do not contact me again."

But Major's not the one to pity. No, the real victims are, of course, Gosselin's eight kids, who Major claims were home when she hooked up with Gosselin at the family's Wernersville, Pa., house.

"Jon said he couldn't be seen having a girlfriend, so he told me to drive to a neighbor's house after midnight, when the kids were asleep," Major told Life & Style. "He said he'd pick me up on his four-wheeler, take me to his house and drop me off again at 6 a.m.

"I was shocked and said, 'No, I don't feel right doing that. What if the kids wake up?'" she said. "He was like, 'They're not going to notice, they're not going to see anything.' He wasn't nervous about it -- I was."

Besides that, the children also endured a verbal argument between their parents last week that got so brutal, cops came in to calm things down.

"[Kate] tried to come home yesterday and I wouldn't let her in the gate and I guess she called the police," Gosselin told Splash News the following day, explaining that he hired a babysitter to watch after his brood because he had to "get things done" and their mother came over because she didn't approve.

"It was a miscommunication," he added. "She tried to 'cry it up' with the cops and it didn't work. They said, 'You have to leave.'"

For some dads, tearing through Pennsylvania, New York City, the Hamptons (with Major) and St. Tropez (with Glassman) in the span of two months would justify spending the rest of August swaying in a hammock, swigging a bottle of beer. Not Gosselin. The next stop on his summer of love: Las Vegas, to host a pool party at MGM Grand's Wet Republic Aug. 29.

Considering all that has happened this season, Gosselin may want to consider a different course of action: going to his brand new apartment on Manhattan's Upper West Side, locking the door, shutting the blinds, crawling into bed and blasting "Cruel Summer" (either the Bananarama or the Ace of Base version, depending on which generation the 32-year-old dad considers himself) on repeat until the leaves, and maybe his luck, start to turn.
