Casting the New 'Charlie's Angels': 3 Options for Each of 8 Characters

Nov. 19, 2009 — -- It takes a certain crop of ladies to pull off a proper, "Hellooooo, Charlie!"

The question is, as a reincarnation of the iconic 1970s TV series "Charlie's Angels" looms, who's fit to fill the shoes of Farrah Fawcett, Kate Jackson, Jaclyn Smith and the rest of the crew?

Whoever gets the call, ABC is close to ordering a pilot of the new "Charlie's Angels," sources confirm to ABCNews.com. Drew Barrymore, who starred in the film versions of the franchise, will develop the show along with Leonard Goldberg, who produced the original series with the late Aaron Spelling, according to Entertainment Weekly.

So it's a stretch to say the project's in the can. But that can't kill the curiosity about which stars might be cast in the reboot.

What follows are three potential options for each of the eight classic "Charlie's Angels" characters, based on the suggestions that you -- ABCNews.com readers -- sent to us.

Jill Munroe

Could now be played by: Kristen Bell, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Jessica Simpson

Let it be known that no one can truly replace the woman who personified '70s sexy and pioneered the hairstyle of a generation. "I was one of those girls born at the right time so that my parents NAMED me after her," wrote Farrah Victory of Nashville, Tenn. "There will NEVER be a 'new' Farrah Fawcett!"

True. But if Barrymore's project goes full speed ahead, someone will have to step into the role of Jill Munroe, the gorgeous girl next door who can skateboard as well as she can vogue. And while a modern day Munroe could theoretically rock any hair color, it's hard to picture her without seeing the late Fawcett's signature flaxen locks.

Enter a trio of butt-kicking, beautiful, blond contenders. Kristen Bell gained a cult of fans playing a detective on "Veronica Mars"; Sarah Michelle Gellar still enjoys celebrity status from headlining the '90s hit series "Buffy the Vampire Slayer"; and Jessica Simpson wreaked havoc in short-shorts in "The Dukes of Hazzard."

Kelly Garret

With her dark, sexy locks, Kelly Garret could easily be brought back to life by one of today's brunette bombshells. "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" star Mila Kunis and "Transformers" siren Megan Fox boast Garret's sex appeal and spirit of adventure. But perhaps the part calls for a more seasoned actress who can bring a bit of diversity. Many ABCNews.com readers noted that the new iteration of "Charlie's Angels" must incorporate stars of all colors if it wants to stay current.

Jada Pinkett-Smith made the transition from movies back to TV earlier this year with "Hawthorne" -- why not "Angels" next?

Sabrina Duncan

"Smart Angel" Sabrina Duncan, aka Bree, must be resurrected by a gal who can let her brains and wit shine ... but bring out the sexy when need be. Katherine Moennig, who co-starred in Showtime's "The L Word," strikes the perfect balance of clever and coy. Anyone who's seen Michelle Trachtenberg in action as Georgina Sparks on "Gossip Girl" knows she can turn from conniving to cute with the whip of her hair. Jessica Alba, with her geek-tastic roots in the TV show "Dark Angel" and "Fantastic Four" series of movies, can play a schemer as well as a seductress.

Kris Munroe

Known as the fun foil to her sporty older sister Jill, Kris Munroe embraced her cases with the Townsend Agency just as she relished her romances with men. But at the end of the day, she remained the kid sis of the show's main character, so an up-and-coming actress seems appropriate to fill her role today. "Gossip Girl" star Blake Lively sports the spunk and sass necessary to pull off Kris. "Hanna Montana" actress Miley Cyrus could step into one of her first big-girl gigs with the part of the younger Munroe. And, if older sister Jessica Simpson scores the marquee role, Ashlee Simpson-Wentz would just make sense acting alongside her. She tried her hand at the new "Melrose Place" -- how about giving another remake a go?

Tiffany Welles

Tiffany Welles embodies class to a T. Hailing from blue-blood Boston, unlike the rest of the California-girl Angels, Welles boasts an upper-crust resume and an air of elegance. It takes a specific breed of actress to pull off that pedigree. Claire Danes and Julia Stiles can read modern interpretations of Shakespeare ("Romeo and Juliet" and "10 Things I Hate About You," respectively) while clad in a strand of pearls and stiff smile. Kerry Washington often straddles the line between fine film and TV ("Ray," "Boston Legal"), and always leaves the impression that she's someone to be taken seriously.

Julie Rogers

Could now be played by: Lady Gaga, Kim Kardashian, Drew Barrymore

If Welles whispers class, Julie Rogers growls tough. Born in the Bronx, Rogers spent time on the wrong side of the law before morphing into an Angel, but not one at home in the sky and clouds -- no, Rogers loves the sand and sea, and the licence it gives her to wear a bikini.

Lady Gaga, with her New York City roots and penchant for leotards, could shimmy from the music realm into acting by playing Rogers. Kim Kardashian, a big fan of filling out bikinis for all the paparazzi to see, is another option. But perhaps the most appropriate choice of all would be Barrymore. With her unique combination of street spunk and sexy confidence -- not to mention her history with the "Angels" franchise -- the woman behind the scenes of the TV reboot could seamlessly slip in front of the camera as Rogers.

John Bosley

As the face of the agency, John Bosley serves as the middle man between the never-seen Charlie Townsend and his Angels. Compared to the beauties, he's an average looking fellow; he fulfills the brotherly role of humoring and helping them through missions without ever coming off as a cad. "According to Jim" star Jim Belushi and "Roseanne" vet John Goodman, both fit the role of the innocuous, well-meaning, good-natured Bosley. But the show could kick the screwball factor up a notch by installing a comedian, as the movie "Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle" did when it cast the late Bernie Mac as Bosley. Tracy Morgan, anyone?

Charlie Townsend

Finally, the character no one ever sees still deserves utmost consideration in the casting process. Millionaire/private investigator Charlie Townsend needs a commanding voice to direct Bosley and the Angels via speaker phone -- "Frasier" star Kelsey Grammer and "Damages" actor Ted Danson could strike the perfect balance of mysterious and well-meaning. But one ABCNews.com reader suggested something completely different. "Charlie [could be] played by either [President] Obama, Obama's brother, or Jerry Seinfeld," wrote Jeff Paige from Raleigh, N.C. The commander in chief moonlighting in prime time? If Ronald Reagan hopped from B movies to the White House, well, why not?
