Jennifer Lopez to donate $1 million for Puerto Rico hurricane relief
Hurricane Maria ravaged the island last week, destroying homes and businesses.
— -- Jennifer Lopez announced on Sunday that she is donating $1 million from the proceeds of her Las Vegas show to hurricane relief efforts in Puerto Rico.
She made the announcement at a press conference Sunday alongside New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
Speaking first in Spanish and then in English, Lopez announced the donation would go to charitable organizations and other nongovernmental organizations.
She also announced that she and boyfriend, former New York Yankee Alex Rodriguez, are "utilizing all of our resources and relationships in entertainment, sports and business to garner support for Puerto Rican and Caribbean relief efforts," and that they have secured a commitment for help from Major League Baseball and the Yankees.
Lopez also announced that she's been working with Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban and Mavericks player J.J. Barea, that the group is ready to send two planes filled with supplies to San Juan when air travel is cleared.
Hurricane Maria ravaged Puerto Rico, leaving 100 percent of the island without power. The hurricane was a Category 4 storm with winds of 155 miles per hour when it made landfall on the U.S. territory Sept. 20.
Lopez is one of many artists, including Ricky Martin and Luis Fonsi, who have posted about how much help the island needs since the storm.
