Jon Loves Girlfriend 'More Than I Do Kate'

Sept. 8, 2009— -- When Jon and Kate Gosselin -- the overachieving parents of twins and sextuplets whose family life spawned the hit reality show "Jon & Kate Plus Eight" -- announced that their marriage was on the rocks, Jon soon came in for some harsh public treatment.

Kate began spilling her heart out about the couple's problems, while Jon chose to explore the party scene. He was photographed on yachts, living it up as his marriage fell apart.

In a recent People magazine article, Kate jokingly blamed an alien abduction for Jon's transformation from a computer technician into a rock 'n' roll jet-setter.

Now, Jon has told ABC News in an exclusive interview that the headlines have been unfair. Magazine cover stories bashing him and praising Kate, he said, were both off-base and beside the point.

"I would say, let's finish what we got to finish and move on with our lives," Gosselin said. "And stop feeding into the frenzy."

The media feeding frenzy and the reality series based on the couple's life together are a long way from the simple beginnings and tender moments the family once knew. Gosselin shared private home videos with ABC News that captured the family in earlier, happier days.

Now Jon and Kate live the life of parents with shared custody -- when it's his turn, Jon packs up his car and commutes from New York City to Pennsylvania to be with the kids. When he's with the kids she's not, and when she's with the kids he's not.

While they're still trying to iron out their routine, that hasn't stopped Jon from voicing some surprising feelings about Kate.

Their relationship has gotten to the point, he said, that the two have to shoot the show separately.

"We film it separately," Gosselin said. "She has her film crew. And I have my film crew. But I can't sit on the sofa with that woman. I can't sit on someone right now that I despise."

"I despise [her] because she's not speaking from the heart," he said. "Please -- the stuff you tell me in private should be the stuff you tell me on TV."

In a statement to ABC News, Kate Gosselin said she did believe in drawing a line between public and private.

"While I certainly have a very different perception of how our marriage dissolved, for the sake of my children I maintain that I'm not going to go into details of aspects I believe should remain private," Kate Gosselin said in the statement.

Gosselin said that at this point he believes his relationship with Kate is over.

"Our relationship will never be fixed," he said. "I think down the road we might be friends, but at this point in time I don't think so."

Gosselin explained why he thought Kate still wears her wedding band.

"I think she still wears the ring for public perception," he said. "I don't wear my ring because she took my ring. I don't have it.

"I don't have the ring," Gosselin said. "So I laid it down one night. It was gone. Who else would take it? I checked all the -- underneath my kids' pillows. That's where everything ends up in the house anyway. So it wasn't there.

Kate Gosselin declined to comment beyond her statement to ABC News.

Gosselin: 'I Didn't Leave Kate for Hailey'

Also in his interview with ABC, Gosselin discusses his relationship with 22-year-old girlfriend Hailey Glassman, the daughter of Kate's former plastic surgeon.

"I didn't leave Kate for Hailey. People think I left Kate for Hailey ... because of the time-frame and what they printed in the tabloids," Gosselin said. "You can't control who you love. I strongly believe that. You cannot control that. It's two people joined together."

Gosselin says Glassman is the "polar opposite of Kate."

"I feel like I love ... love her more than I did Kate," he told Cuomo.

"I get encouragement from her, I get respect from her. Two things that a man needs," he said of his new relationship with Glassman. "This is someone, I mean, like soul mate -- like people joke about that. But I'm not joking about that."

When asked by Cuomo, if he loves Kate, Gosselin replied: "I will always love Kate as the mother of my kids. But to tell you right now, at this point of what's going on, I do not love Kate."

Even before his relationship with Kate officially ended, Gosselin's charmed life in front of the cameras quickly became a life in the tabloids. A photo of Gosselin and 23-year-old third grade teacher Deanna Hummel leaving a club in April spurred tabloid headlines that he had been "caught with another woman" -- allegations which Gosselin denies.

"This was just my friend," he said of his relationship with Hummel. "I just hung out with her."

But there were more photos -- and more women. Kate Major, a former reporter from Star magazine, claimed Gosselin was her boyfriend and that the two had to sneak in sex when the kids weren't around. Another headline prompted another round of denials for Gosselin, who said his relationship with Major was not in any sense romantic.

"No romantic fling," he told Cuomo. "She tells stories."

Now, there is Glassman, the new woman in Gosselin's life, who he says he loves.

"I have so much to lose ... in this situation," Gosselin told Cuomo. "I could lose custody, I could lose my kids, I could lose -- but I feel like with [Glassman] that I'm not going to lose them. It's just going to get better."

Tabloid Fodder: Rumors of Kate's Alleged Relationship with Bodyguard

Gosselin wasn't the only one whose love life was debated on magazine covers. Rumors of an alleged relationship between Kate and her married bodyguard, Steve Neild, swirled.

Gosselin told Cuomo he doesn't know if Kate was dating someone else during their marriage, but that he speculated about an alleged relationship.

"I speculate, but I don't know -- that's a general feel. You know, almost like when they were traveling together, I felt jealous," he said. "Here, I'm Mr. Mom. And then there's some other guy traveling with my wife. Whether it's protection or not, it's all in -- it's in the back of my mind."

Kate and the bodyguard, who have traveled together on a book tour, have both denied any relationship.

With his marriage ending and the long-term future of the show in question, Gosselin knows that America's perception of him has dramatically changed from the beginning.

"It's just like the change from America's favorite dad to dirt-bag. Tomorrow I could be maybe ... America's favorite dad again. It could be after this interview. I don't know," he said. "Whatever they want to write, let them write it. They're going to write it anyway. I've learned that lesson."
