Randi Quaid and Wife Evi Arrested Once Again
The couple was jailed briefly after failing to show up in their criminal case.
April 27, 2010 -- Randy Quaid and his wife Evi were arrested -- again.
Randy Quaid and his wife were the temporary guests of the Santa Barbara County Main Jail yesterday after a judge ordered them locked up as no-show defendants in a fraud case over a $10,000 hotel bill.
The "National Lampoon's Vacation" star and his wife, Evi Quaid, were released less than four hours later after posting $100,000 bail each, according to The Associated Press. They were told to return to court for a hearing tomorrow.
The Quaids have repeatedly failed to show up for hearings in a felony case alleging they defrauded an inn out of more than $10,000. They have also pleaded not guilty to charges of burglary and conspiracy.
Their attorney Robert Sanger said the Quaids have repaid the money and hope to resolve the case without a trial.
But when they skipped a hearing on April 12, a judge ordered the couple's bail of $20,000 each forfeited. Arrest warrants were issued after the Quaids failed to show up the next day as well.
The case stems from their arrest in Texas last September after the Santa Barbara Sheriff's Department issued a warrant when they failed to pay a bill to a California hotel.
The Quaids claimed it was all a publicity ploy on the part of the San Ysidro Ranch hotel and sent a statement to TMZ, which read in part, "I promise the state of California, Texas does not bother people over hamburgers ordered by room service, supposedly burglarized."
"I promise you, we have paid our bill -- here's a copy of the cashier's check -- and this is all for PR, " they said in a handwritten note.
They included with the statement a copy of a cashier's check which appeared dated Sept. 22 for $5,546.96.
The Quaids posted $20,000 bond each before being released from jail in Marfa, Texas.
According to TMZ, that was not the first time the Quaids failed to pay their hotel tab. They allegedly stiffed the Bel-Air Hotel in Los Angeles among other places.
