ABC News Announces the Charles Gibson 'Good Morning America' Scholarship
June 28, 2006 -- ABC News' "Good Morning America" celebrated Charles Gibson's last day as co-anchor of "GMA" this morning with a party in its Times Square Studios.
The morning showcased many surprises for the veteran newsman, including the announcement of The Charles Gibson Good Morning America Scholarship.
The scholarship will be awarded annually to one or two college or graduate school students who most exemplify Gibson's unique commitment to the highest standards of journalism, his deep caring about country, community and family, and who demonstrate a dedication to a career in broadcasting, especially morning television.
In addition to a stipend, the scholarship will involve an internship at "Good Morning America's" New York headquarters.
Created and sponsored by ABC News President David Westin and "GMA" co-anchors Diane Sawyer and Robin Roberts, The Charles Gibson Good Morning America Scholarship will be awarded after a national competition involving an essay contest and videotape entry in which candidates demonstrate their commitments to journalism and community.
Finalists will be interviewed by a selection committee, including senior ABC News executives and the executive producer of "GMA."
The recipient will report directly to the executive producer with daily assignments throughout the broadcast.
Check the "Good Morning America" site for updates about the scholarship.
