Dr. Granger answers the question: 'Second-Hand Smoke And Heart Danger?'
-- Question: What is second-hand smoke and why is it dangerous for the heart?
Answer: Second-hand smoke is smoke that you may be exposed to because a family member or a co-worker or a friend is smoking cigarettes, cigars, or pipes nearby you.
We used to think that that wasn't a problem, but now we know, that in fact, that that is a major problem, and that there may be as many as 30,000 deaths a year in the United States caused by second-hand cigarette smoke.
So, especially if you have other risk factors for coronary artery disease, try to avoid being around other people who are smoking. And you can do them a favor as well if you encourage them to quit.
