British Man Accused of Plot Against US Military in UK
Man and uncle also accused of possible attempt to join ISIS in Syria.
— -- A British man has been charged for allegedly planning a terrorist attack on U.S. military personnel in the U.K., according to a statement released today by Britain's Crown Prosecution Service, which prosecutes criminal cases investigated by the police.
Junead Khan, 24, from Luton, U.K., was arrested on July 14 under the Terrorism Act for being involved in the plan with the intention to commit acts of terrorism.
Khan allegedly was planning to run over a U.S. military member with a car and attack him with a knife, potentially while wearing a suicide vest, officials said at a court hearing in Westminster Magistrates’ Court in London today.
Khan's uncle, Shazib Khan, 22, also was arrested, and both are accused of plotting to join ISIS in Syria, officials said.
“We have concluded that there is sufficient evidence and it is in the public interest to charge Junead Khan and Shazib Khan with the intention of committing acts of terrorism," Deborah Walsh, deputy head of counter terrorism at the Crown Prosecution Service, said in the statement.
“Criminal proceedings have now commenced and both men have a right to a fair trial," Walsh said.
The two men are expected to appear again in court on Aug. 10.
On July 4, the U.S Air Force canceled a scheduled two-day concert at a U.S military base in Norfolk, U.K., amid fears of an attack. Officials were declining to comment or speculate on any possible link between the arrests and the Fourth of July concert cancellation, a spokeswoman for RAF Lakenheath told ABC News.
