See How This Pup Protects Against the Cold

Cruz is on the Amtrak Police Department's canine force

— -- With temperatures hitting frigid lows across the country, even dogs who spend their days fighting crime need a little help staying warm.

One such pup, Cruz, a member of the Amtrak Police Department’s K9 unit, was photographed in action today at Boston’s South Street Station wearing booties on his four paws to guard against below-freezing temps.

“The booties are distributed to all members of the K9 Unit to be used at the handler’s discretion to protect the dog’s feet against the environmental conditions related to winter,” an Amtrak spokeswoman told ABC News.

The photo was captured by Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist Stanley Forman for ABC’s Boston affiliate, WCVB.

Forman and his reporting partner, WCVB reporter Frank Holland, were at South Street Station today when they spotted Cruz.

“We just thought the dog was styling,” said Holland, who posted a photo of Cruz on Twitter.

“It's freezing here so we're all bundled up and bulky,” Holland told ABC News by email. “I said, ‘The dog is cooler than us and warmer than us at the same time!’”
